9:00 AM – 11:30 AM - Dr. SeriaShia Chatters-Smith, Penn State University - "Bias and Bullying: Implications for Mental Health in Schools"

Workshop Description: In this workshop, participants will learn about the prevalence and impact of bias based bullying and how to begin the journey of identifying and recognizing their own bias. Additionally, participants will learn methods to address bias bullying as an active bystander, a colleague, a friend, and most of all, an educator.

12:15 PM – 1:15 PM - Officer Adam Salyards, State College Police – "Monitoring Our Youth: Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco Trends and Prevention"

Workshop Description: As society progresses and technology advances so do the trends of substance abuse.  Substance abuse among our youth whether it be drugs, alcohol, or tobacco are a concern for all of us.  Combating these abuses requires all of us to be educated on the current trends and risk factors of the youth population.  Utilizing all of your resources to combat risk factors and substance abuse is going to require a partnership with law enforcement and other agencies with varying skills and backgrounds. 

This program intends to provide an insight into the risk factors, trends, and abuses we are seeing with our youth population today.  The program will also provide different ideas on how law enforcement can be a partner in your education and prevention programs.

1:30 PM -  3:00 PM - Marisa Vicere, Jana Marie Foundation  – "Mind Matters: the Power of Mindfulness, Hardiness and Positive Mindset."

Workshop Description: All of us will face adversity at some point in our lives. Having the opportunity to identify sources of stress and learn practical and healthy ways to cope can assist individuals thrive despite being faced with challenges. Mind Matters is a two hour course designed to help 6th‐12th grade students learn how to navigate through the tough times and grow from their experiences. This session will take you through this interactive course and provide you with resources and materials to take back to your school/students.

Continuing Education Credits

PASAP is an Act 48 Approved Provider. Participants can earn five (5) hours of Act 48 credit (must attend the full day to receive Act 48 credit). Participants must provide their Professional Personnel ID (PPID) number when registering and must be present at each session in its entirety to receive credit.  Additionally, up to five (5) ours of social work credits will be offered through the University of Pittsburgh.  A $10 fee for the social work credits will be added at the time of registration.

Speaker Bios:

Dr. SeriaShia Chatters is an Assistant Professor of Counselor Education in the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education at The Pennsylvania State University. She is the Coordinator of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling in Schools and Communities Emphasis area and the Practicum Coordinator of the Counselor Education Masters program. Her research interests focus on the impact of diversity on interpersonal violence with a specific focus on the prevention of bullying and harassment in secondary, postsecondary, and work settings. Additionally, her research focuses on how prejudice and bullying intersect, better known as bias-based bullying, and how different aspects of diversity such as ethnicity, race, disability, LGBT, religion, poverty, and veteran status impact experiences of bullying, cyberbullying, and interpersonal violence. Dr. Chatters uses novel methods, such as analysis of brainwave patterns in response to situations involving bullying situations, to investigate correlates of the aforementioned research areas. Dr. Chatters provides training for school personnel to aid them in developing an understanding of bias based bullying, how to respond to it, and how to work toward prevention in school settings. 

The Community Relations and Crime Prevention (CRCP) specialist, Officer Adam Salyards, focuses on police public relations and crime prevention through a variety of programs and projects.

The CRCP officer offers health and safety/crime prevention programming to the community on a variety of topics including dangerous intruder/active shooter response, cyber bullying, scam awareness, identity theft, bicycle safety, DUI’s, dangerous drinking, stranger danger, and personal safety. The CRCP officer participates on committees for the LION Walk, nuisance housing task force, TRIAD, Centre Region Care Partnership/Communities that Care and co-chairs the F8 committee.

Marisa Vicere is a strong believer in the empowerment of young people, Marisa Vicere founded and became president of Jana Marie Foundation in 2012. The experience of losing her sister Jana Vicere to suicide in 2011 cemented her commitment to helping young people navigate through the tough transitional teen years and educating parents and community members about mental and emotional health. In addition to her work with Jana Marie Foundation, Marisa serves on the board for Prevent Suicide PA, is chair for the Centre County Suicide Prevention Task Force and volunteers at Tides. Marisa holds a B.S. in Global Management and Marketing from Susquehanna University and a MBA from the Penn State Smeal College of Business.
